Durham County Board of Commissioners Regular Session Recap: February 10, 2025

DURHAM, N.C. – The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) convened on Monday, February 10, 2025, for its Regular Session, held in person and virtually at 200 E. Main Street. Chair Nida Allam led the meeting, which included community updates, proclamations, and legislative decisions.

Key Highlights

Public Announcements & Initiatives

  • 2025 DCo Cares Recipient Applications Open: Nonprofits serving the Triangle can apply through Feb. 21, 2025, for funding from Durham County Government employees’ giving campaign. Apply Here
  • Public Input for FY26 Transit Work Program: Residents can submit comments through Feb. 21, 2025, via survey here or attend public tabling sessions at Durham Station on Feb. 12 & 18.
  • Black History Month Events at Durham County Library: A variety of programs are being held throughout February. Find events here
  • Farmland Protection Plan Public Meeting: Residents are invited to discuss farming challenges and solutions on Feb. 20, 6 p.m., at Bahama Ruritan Club. Register here
  • Durham Area Food & Resources Map: An interactive tool to locate food pantries, hot meal sites, and SNAP/WIC-eligible locations. Access the map
  • Tax Liens & Reappraisal Notices:
    • Unpaid real estate taxes will be published in a local newspaper on March 26 if not paid by March 11. More info
    • 2025 Reappraisal Notices will be mailed in early March, providing updated assessed values for properties.
  • Free NC Voter ID Event: The Durham County Board of Elections will provide free voter ID cards on Feb. 22 (12-3 p.m.) at North Regional Library. More info
  • Sheriff’s Office Community Academy: Learn about law enforcement and engage with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office by enrolling in this community program. Apply here

Ceremonial Recognitions

  • Introduction of New Durham County Memorial Stadium Manager, Evan Kramer: With extensive experience in sports management and event coordination, Kramer was recognized for his contributions to the stadium’s operations and development.
  • Black History Month Proclamation: The BOCC issued a proclamation honoring African American contributions in Durham County and beyond.
  • Resolution Honoring the Lives of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha: On the 10th anniversary of their passing, the BOCC approved a resolution during the regular session recognizing the victims’ dedication to education and humanitarian efforts.

Legislative Actions

The Board approved multiple items, including:

  • A $385,485 contract for Sheriff’s Office vehicle equipment.
  • A $15,000 grant from Duke University for the 2026 Durham County Health Assessment.
  • A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with NC Department of Public Safety for the Durham County Youth Home.
  • A $302,273 contract for disaster recovery and data protection at the Sheriff’s Office.
  • An extension of China Wok’s lease in Shoppes of Hope Valley through 2027.
  • $100,000 in matching grants to support local projects in FY 2024-25.
  • Approval of advertising 2024 tax liens on real property.

Other Business

2025 General Reappraisal Update: The Tax Administration Department provided an update on the latest property valuation process, which took effect on January 1, 2025.
