Durham’s Own Trey Murphy III Hosts Free Youth Basketball Clinic & Back-to-School Bash
DURHAM, N.C. — NBA forward Trey Murphy III is coming home to give back to the community that raised him. In partnership with Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR), the New Orleans Pelicans star will host his annual Basketball Skills Development Clinic and Back-to-School Community Bash — two free events dedicated to empowering youth and preparing families for the upcoming school year.
Free Basketball Clinic for Youth – July 25
The two-day celebration kicks off on Friday, July 25, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Basketball Skills Development Clinic for youth ages 11–16. Held at the I.R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills (2000 S. Alston Avenue), the clinic gives aspiring athletes the rare opportunity to learn firsthand from a professional basketball player.
Participants will join Trey Murphy III in a series of interactive drills and coaching sessions focused on dribbling, shooting, defense, and teamwork. A few spots remain, and registration is required to attend.
“Coming back to Durham and giving back to the community that helped shape me means everything,” said Murphy. “I grew up playing at rec centers in Durham and learned so much on and off the court. Helping the next generation of hoopers and making sure they’re ready for school — that’s what it’s all about.”
Back-to-School Community Bash – July 26
The celebration continues on Saturday, July 26, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., also at the Campus Hills Recreation Center, with the Back-to-School Community Bash. This fun-filled afternoon is open to registered families and features:
- Free school supplies
- Community resource booths
- Arts and crafts
- Games and activities
- Special appearance by Trey Murphy III
Due to high demand, the event is currently full, but families can still join the waiting list online.
A Hometown Hero Giving Back
Before making it to the NBA, Trey Murphy III was just a kid with a dream, playing pickup games at DPR rec centers and joining local leagues throughout Durham County. His love for the game and strong community roots inspire him to continue donating his time and resources to Bull City youth.
Registration Info
Both events are free to attend, but pre-registration is required, and space is limited.
