MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — The search for 18-year-old Giovanni “Gio” Pelletier, who vanished while on a family vacation in Florida, has come to a tragic end. His body was discovered on Friday (Aug. 8) in a retention pond near Bradenton, close to where his backpack had been located earlier in the investigation, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Pelletier, a recent Fuquay-Varina High School graduate, had been missing since late July. His body was found near the southbound off-ramp of Interstate 75 and State Road 70, an area authorities had searched on the first day of search efforts.

Discovery by Private Investigators

The breakthrough came when a private investigation group, hired by the Pelletier family, located Gio’s body. His mother, Bridgette Pelletier, shared her grief in a social media post, calling it “every parent’s worst nightmare” and asking for privacy as the family plans his farewell. Giovanni leaves behind four younger siblings.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities say there was no immediate physical evidence of foul play, but the case remains active. An autopsy will be conducted, and a toxicology report is expected in about six months.

Retired FBI Special Agent Frank Brostrom told ABC11 that investigators will examine any evidence recovered from Giovanni’s body and the area where he was found. “How did he die? What’s the cause and manner of death?” Brostrom said. “That’s going to be key to matching up with the events described by those who last saw him.”

Questions About Final Hours

Before disappearing, Giovanni reportedly sent an ominous text to his mother asking for help about 20 minutes after getting into a car with his cousins. Those cousins told authorities that Gio acted erratically, pulled a knife, and then left the car on his own.

“Maybe he had some kind of episode and panicked, ran out of the car, and fell into the water,” Brostrom speculated, while also questioning inconsistencies. “Why didn’t they call the police? Why didn’t they call the family right away?”

Timeline Under Scrutiny

Investigators are expected to closely examine the timeline between when Gio was last seen and when family members were informed he was missing. Experts stress that those last known interactions will be critical in determining exactly what happened.

Anyone with information that may help the investigation is asked to call the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at 941-747-3011 or contact Crime Stoppers at 866-634-8477.
