Former Rolesville High Principal Dies After Wake Forest Shooting; Teen Suspect Charged

Wake Forest, N.C. (Sept. 9, 2025) – The Wake Forest community is mourning the loss of Ericka Lucas, 56, a beloved educator and former principal of Rolesville High School. Lucas, the wife of Wake Forest High School football coach Reggie Lucas, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an Aug. 29 shooting on East Nelson Avenue.
Police believe Lucas was not the intended target and was struck by gunfire aimed at someone else. Just days before her passing, the Wake Forest community rallied at a football game, wearing blue to show support for the Lucas family.
A Legacy of Leadership and Compassion
Throughout her career, Lucas was known for her commitment to students. In 2014, she called on the community to donate food so no student at Rolesville High would go hungry. “I’m here for all kids,” she said. “Every day, every child, whatever it takes, and once a Ram, always a Ram.”
Former students remember her energy and dedication. One recalled, “She brought a whole new spirit and enthusiasm to gym class. I have very cherished memories.”
Arrests and Charges

On Tuesday afternoon, Dexter Lamont Mills, 18, of Wake Forest, was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held without bond. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested earlier on Aug. 30 and also faces a murder charge.
Wake Forest Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call the Police Tip Line at (919) 435-9610.
Community in Mourning
Lucas’ death has left a deep void in the education and sports community. She was admired not only for her leadership as principal but also for her role as a coach’s wife, mentor, and community advocate.
“Her sudden passing is a devastating loss,” a community member shared. “Her dedication to students and her love for this community will never be forgotten.”
