Carrboro Police launch a manhunt after a woman was attacked and nearly raped on the Frances Shetley Bikeway early Thursday morning.

Manhunt Underway After Attempted Rape on Carrboro’s Frances Shetley Bikeway

CARRBORO, N.C. – A manhunt is underway after a woman was attacked and nearly raped early Thursday morning (Oct. 9, 2025) while walking her dog along the Frances Shetley Bikeway in Carrboro.

According to the Carrboro Police Department, the assault occurred between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on the popular pedestrian and bike path that runs between North Greensboro Street and Shelton Street. The survivor was taken to UNC Hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have launched an active search for the suspect, described as a Black male, approximately 5’6” to 5’10” tall, around 40 years old, with a medium build, last seen wearing a gray hoodie and dark pants.

Authorities said the Frances Shetley Bikeway is heavily used by residents and lies close to Carrboro Elementary School and several neighborhoods. The Chapel Hill–Carrboro School System has been notified of the incident.

“This assault occurred in a well-traveled area, and we’re asking everyone to stay alert,” police said in a statement. “Our priority is to locate and apprehend the suspect as quickly as possible.”

Police are urging residents to avoid isolated areas, walk in pairs when possible, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
