Four Killed, 20 Injured in Mass Shooting at South Carolina Bar on St. Helena Island
BEAUFORT, S.C. — A late-night shooting at Willie’s Bar & Grill on St. Helena Island shattered the peace of the coastal South Carolina community early Sunday morning, leaving four people dead and at least 20 others injured, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the mass shooting occurred just after midnight at the popular bar, which was packed with weekend patrons when gunfire erupted. Deputies responding to the scene found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, both inside and outside the establishment on St. Helena Island, about 60 miles from Hilton Head Island.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Community in Shock
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while at least 20 others were transported to area hospitals. Officials confirmed that four of the wounded remain in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.
The victims’ names have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said. “We ask for patience as we continue to investigate. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.”
Elected Officials Respond
In a post on X, U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R–S.C.) called the tragedy heartbreaking.
“Completely heartbroken to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made, and investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office tip line.
