County Commissioner Stephen J. Valentine Named James E. Clyburn Leadership Institute Fellow

County Commissioner Stephen J. Valentine has been selected as a James E. Clyburn Leadership Institute Fellow, marking a significant milestone in his public service journey and a proud moment for Durham County. Established in 2021 by Omega Network for Action, the James E. Clyburn Leadership Institute (JECLI) serves as the organization’s training arm, dedicated to cultivating the next generation of legislative leaders.

His acceptance into this prestigious fellowship places him among a distinguished cohort of emerging leaders committed to strengthening communities, expanding civic engagement, and advancing policy solutions across the South.

Commissioner Valentine’s selection reflects both his record of service and his forward‑looking vision for Durham County. As a public official, he has championed initiatives centered on community empowerment, veterans’ advocacy, and accessible government. 

The Clyburn Fellowship will provide him with advanced leadership training, policy development experience, and a regional network of changemakers—tools he plans to bring back home to enhance the work already underway in Durham.

Commissioner Valentine shared that the fellowship represents “an opportunity to grow, to listen, and to lead with even greater purpose.” He emphasized his commitment to using this experience to elevate the voices of residents, strengthen partnerships, and continue building a county government that reflects the needs and aspirations of its people.

The James E. Clyburn Leadership Institute, named for the longtime congressman and national statesman, is known for cultivating leaders who are prepared to address the most pressing challenges facing communities today.

Commissioner Valentine’s acceptance underscores Durham County’s rising influence in regional leadership and its dedication to fostering public servants who lead with integrity, innovation, and heart.
