She Ran for Her Life: North Carolina Girl Escapes Alleged Kidnapping
A 12-year-old North Carolina girl’s terrifying sleepover took a horrifying turn when she was allegedly taken from a home, driven into the woods and forced to fight her way to freedom. Her desperate escape ended with a stranger stopping just in time.
What began as an ordinary sleepover in Lillington, North Carolina, allegedly turned into a nightmare for a 12-year-old girl who police say was kidnapped by the uncle of her friend.
According to court records, Daniel Francis Gear, 38, is facing charges of first-degree kidnapping and assault on a female. Arrest warrants allege that Gear terrorized the child, pushed her to the ground and physically restrained her after taking her from a home in Lillington, approximately 30 miles southwest of Raleigh.
But the girl’s ordeal did not end in the woods.
She ran.
And a passerby saw her.
A Terrifying Cry for Help
Jennifer Maxwell was driving home from work Sunday afternoon along U.S. Highway 421 when she noticed something unusual near the roadway.
A young girl suddenly emerged from the woods.
Then, according to Maxwell, the child collapsed into a ditch, crying hysterically.
Maxwell turned her vehicle around and approached the girl.
“I rolled down my window, and I was like, ‘Baby, are you okay?’” Maxwell told WRAL.
The girl’s response immediately changed everything.
“No, I’ve been kidnapped.”
Maxwell said she asked the girl if she was serious.
“Yes, I’m serious. I was kidnapped,” the girl reportedly replied.
The child was barefoot and covered in scratches, according to Maxwell.
She had apparently escaped from the woods and made it to the highway—but she was still frightened and in need of help.
From a Sleepover to a Nightmare
According to Maxwell, the girl told her that she had been sleeping over at a friend’s house when Gear allegedly woke her.
The girl said Gear instructed her to get into his truck.
They drove to a wooded area, where he allegedly made her get out.
From there, the child’s account described a frightening struggle.
“He just kept like kind of pushing her, grabbing her shoulder, pushing her, making her walk,” Maxwell recounted to WRAL.
Then came the moment that may have saved her life.
The girl escaped.
She ran.
She headed toward the highway, emerging from the woods battered, barefoot and terrified—and into the path of Maxwell’s vehicle.
Instead of driving past, Maxwell stopped.
The good Samaritan took the girl to a police station, where she received assistance.
Seven Hours of Searching
The girl’s escape triggered a massive search for Gear.
Authorities launched a roughly seven-hour manhunt, eventually locating the suspect in a wooded area approximately 15 miles from where the alleged kidnapping occurred.
The arrest brought an end to the search, but left a community struggling to understand how such a frightening incident could happen so close to home.
Neighbors told WRAL that Gear’s niece, who lives at the home, and the alleged victim were friends and lived next door to one another.
Susan and Logan Powers told the outlet that their 14-year-old daughter was also friends with the girl.
For the Powers family, the incident was difficult to comprehend.
“It’s just, it was a sad, sad event. I feel for her parents,” Susan Powers said.
A Neighbor Few People Knew
Despite living in the neighborhood, Gear reportedly kept a low profile.
Logan Powers told WRAL that many neighbors barely knew him.
“Actually, to be honest, nobody really knew who he was,” Powers said. “I have a lot of neighbors, like, confused and didn’t know him by name. He never really came out of the house. He worked from home.”
Now, a quiet neighborhood is grappling with the shocking allegations and the terrifying ordeal experienced by a child who was simply supposed to be spending the night with a friend.
Gear remains held at the Harnett County Jail on a $2.5 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 1.
For the 12-year-old girl, however, the most important moment may have come when she stepped out of those woods.
She was scared. She was injured. She was alone.
But she kept running—and eventually, someone stopped to help.
