Duke and North Carolina Battle for Victory Bell
DURHAM, N.C. — Whether you call this the Battle of the Victory Bell, Battle of Tobacco Road, Battle of the Blues, or the Battle of 15-501, reputations will be on the line this Saturday afternoon as the Duke Blue Devils face the North Carolina Tar Heels at Wallace Wade Stadium in one of college sports’ most anticipated in-state rivalries. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
Duke enters the 113th meeting between the teams at 4-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play after a closely contested game against Georgia Tech, losing 28-25. Meanwhile, North Carolina comes in at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in ACC play after a 21-17 home win over Pittsburgh. Both teams are looking to build momentum and strengthen their position as the conference schedule continues.
Duke’s key piece should be sophomore running back Nate Sheppard, who has rushed for 743 yards this season. His ability to create explosive plays and keep the offense moving downfield will be crucial against the North Carolina defense. Quarterback Walker Eget will also play a major role; he doesn’t need big passing numbers, just timely throws, protection, and the ability to take advantage of opportunities when the Tar Heels crowd the line of scrimmage to prevent first downs and big gains from Sheppard. The Blue Devils’ offensive balance could ultimately determine whether they control the game’s tempo or let North Carolina set the pace. The Blue Devils must convert scoring opportunities into touchdowns to keep the game from getting close.
Playing in front of the home crowd could provide an additional boost, but rivalry games can turn on a dime with a handful of plays. Winning the turnover battle, converting third downs, and finishing drives with touchdowns could determine which team takes home the Victory Bell.
