On September 14th, Spectacular Magazine will recognize and honor the achievements of African Americans between the ages of 18 – 35 who have made a difference in the African American community in eleven (11) categories with the Spectacular Magazine 2019 Emerging Leaders of the Year (ELOY) Awards at a Black-Tie Awards Show at a theater to be announced. The event will kick off with a Red Carpet Reception at 6:00 pm and Awards Show beginning at 7:00 pm.
Nominations were accepted in ten categories and narrowed down by the Emerging Leader of the Year Selection Committee (Committee), based on criteria, to three (3) semi-finalists in each category. Due to overwhelming submissions in the Entrepreneurship category, six semi-finalists were selected and two award recipients will be named in that category. The public will have the opportunity to vote online for these 33 semi-finalists. Based on the results of the online voting process, ten of those will receive the title of Spectacular Magazine 2019 Emerging Leader of the Year. The Committee selected the recipient of the Spectacular Magazine 2019 Emerging Leader of the Year that will also be presented during the Awards Show.
Categories and Criteria
Activism – individual must have made substantial contributions in furtherance of civil rights, civil liberties, and/or human rights; led the development of contemporary measures to fight discrimination and prejudice and the effects of past discrimination; and/or fostered positive intergroup relations among persons of different races, ages, ethnic origin, gender, religious backgrounds, or physical and mental abilities; person of any race, color or creed who serves the African-American community is eligible.
Arts – individual must embody the values and mission of improving their communities through the arts while receiving regional or national regional recognition in the arts; forms of artistic accomplishments may include but not limited to the following: performance, choreography, directing, designing, composition, or visual arts; person of any race, color or creed who serves the African-American community is eligible.
Beauty Industry Professional – individual must be a real industry game-changer; demonstrate leadership skills and impact of their work specifically on the hair, nail and/or skincare industry; must be of African or African-American heritage.
Community Service – individual must have volunteered their time for one or more activities that were to the immediate benefit of others in the community; must be of African or African-American heritage.
Entrepreneurship – individual must be the owner, founder or controlling shareholder of their company and principally responsible for its operation; must have been in business for at least the past six consecutive months, and the business must be a for-profit business; must be of African or African-American heritage.
Education – an individual who is driven by the need to help students succeed and has made significant gains toward eliminating the significant gap between the achievement levels of blacks and non-black students; a person of any race, color or creed who serves the African-American community is eligible.
Fitness – an individual that is contributing in various ways to the advancement and/or promotion of physical activity, fitness, sports, and/or nutrition; must be of African or African-American heritage.
Health – an individual who dedicated their career toward the welfare and advancement of minority health and the elimination of health disparities; has taken action to further the goals of improving the health status of all racial and ethnic minority Americans; must be of African or African-American heritage.
Social Media Influencer – individual has demonstrated that they are the very best in their craft when it comes to social media marketing, content creation and strategy, and overall social media influence; tangible and demonstrable results in the category are mandatory (semi-finalists must create and successfully execute specified social media campaign); must be of African or African-American heritage.
Technology Innovator – individual must have introduced noteworthy innovations in technology that advance business and IT; demonstrable advances in the productivity and potential of business applications as well as technology that contributes significantly to improved efficiency, productivity and the performance of an organization, cause, and/or learning experience. must be of African or African-American heritage.
Nominations accepted in nine categories have been narrowed down to 3 semi-finalists in 7 categories, and due to overwhelming responses in the Activism and Community Service categories, the committee narrowed the semi-finalists down to 6 and two recipients will be named in those categories.

The voting process begins Sunday, August 18th and ends midnight Saturday, August 31st. Winners will be announced at the Spectacular Magazine Emerging Leaders of the Year Awards Show. In addition to the Award, Emerging Leaders will have a feature article on Spectacular Magazine website, as well as, featured on a billboard on a major highway in the Triangle recognizing you as a Spectacular Magazine Emerging Leader. A magazine photo session will take place after the Awards Show on September 14th.
