The Bach’s Lunch Organ Recitals that would have celebrated its 11th year of recitals and the 154th Anniversary of White Rock Baptist Church this year, will pause indefinitely in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the Music Ministry will offer three Mid-Day Concerts featuring the White Rock JuBellate Handbell  Quintet (Oct. 15), Dr. Timothy Holley, cellist (Oct. 22), and Dr. Paula Harrell, organ (Oct. 29).

Performing on October 22,  Dr. Timothy Holley, cellist, is an alumnus of Baldwin-Wallace University and The University of Michigan. His doctoral dissertation focused on the cello music of African American composers; he has given premiere performances of works by T. J. Anderson, William Banfield, Trevor Weston, Adolphus Hailstork, and Valerie Capers. He can also be heard on commercial recordings with Nnenna Freelon (“Homefree”), Oral Moses (“Songs of America”), the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, and the Jazz Studies faculty of North Carolina Central University (“Yule Be Swingin’).

Dr. Holley has lectured on the aesthetic diversity of African-American concert music, the influence of the Negro spiritual on the cello music of African-American composers, the poetry of Langston Hughes, and the music of Howard Swanson. In an effort to foster a greater sense of camaraderie among cellists and knowledge of our history, he established the online Facebook group “The African American Cello History Collective”. He also maintains a blogsite dedicated to essays on the African American concert music tradition titled “A View From The Scroll” (www.viewedscroll.blogpost.com). He is an Associate Professor of Music at North Carolina Central University and has collaborated with the Mallarme’ Chamber Players, the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of The Triangle.

Dr. Holley will be accompanied by Dr. Paula Harrell, the organist at White Rock Baptist Church.

The concert can be viewed on Thursdays, on YouTube at 12:30 pm. Click Here
