Durham Seeks Input on College Heights Historic District Nomination
Public Meeting & Hearing Set for September 4
Durham, NC – If you live or own property in the College Heights neighborhood of Durham, make plans now to attend a public information meeting and hearing next month about this neighborhood’s nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Durham Historic Preservation Commission will hold this meeting on Tuesday, September 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall Committee Room, located on the second floor at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham. While this meeting begins at 8:30 a.m., the College Heights Historic District presentation will not begin until approximately 10 a.m. This meeting will be held in conjunction with a public hearing that the Durham Historic Preservation Commission is required to conduct as part of their certified local government responsibilities to review and comment on National Register nominations for properties in their jurisdiction.
In addition to the Durham Historic Preservation Commission meeting on September 4, the College Heights Historic District will also be considered for National Register of Historic Places nomination by the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, October 11. This second meeting will take place in the Archives & History State Library Building in the third floor conference room at 109 E. Jones St., Raleigh. This Committee will then decide whether to submit this nomination to the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service for final review, and listing in the National Register.
The National Register is the nation’s official list of historic buildings, districts, archaeological sites, and other resources worthy of preservation. More than 3,000 North Carolina properties are now listed in the National Register. Listing in the National Register places no obligation or restrictions on private property owners using private resources to maintain or alter their properties.
