#Motiv8Mondays – Kenny MacGuyver
Welcome to Spectacular Magazine Independent Artist of the Week, the latest Spectacular Magazine weekly feature. Each week Raven Nicole Gibbs (professionally known as Raven Nicole), founder of the non-profit organization Motiv8, Inc., will feature an up-and-coming artist of various genres. This week we are featuring Kenny MacGuyver.
Kenny MacGuyver, is certainly a rarity in the hip hop community. Hailing from the city of Durham in North Carolina, I had to grow “tough skin” and learn to outwit others as a survival tactic of the violent city. These skills helped me in hip hop as well.
I started off my interest in hip hop in the late 90’s by battle rapping. At a young age, I won numerous battle competitions by outwitting my opponents! In 2004 I signed a record deal to Syndicate Records out of Washington DC. Here is where I transitioned from street artist to music artist. Honing my craft, I made a decision to speak positivity into my fans through my music. “It’s like an On/Off switch” manager Shahidi Cook says, “Kenny can destroy and humiliate an opponent, then turn around and make a timeless record.” This is why fans have deemed me “The 16 Bar King”
Some of my musical influences are Big L, Jadakiss and DMX. I am a combination of the 3. Big L and I both share the skill to create amazing punchlines. Jadakiss and I have the flow. DMX and I share our real life stories in our music where you have no choice but to relate, even if you haven’t gone thru the situation.
My hunger comes from a passion for success. Being able to create a path for me and my loved ones to live the American dream.
