NC State Government Has Paid Internships & Scholarships Available For HBCU Students

Raleigh, NC – North Carolina State Government has paid internship opportunities and scholarships available for students attending North Carolina’s Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCU) and Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE).

The North Carolina Governor’s HBCU Internship Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in numerous Fortune 500 companies for rising juniors and seniors at all HBCU institutions in the state of North Carolina. Students benefit from work experience that will increase their competitiveness in the job market. Businesses benefit from access and exposure to an untapped, diverse talent pool. Through this initiative, they hope to increase the capacity of North Carolina’s HBCUs to connect their graduates to the private sector, thus retaining this talent in North Carolina.

The North Carolina State Government Internship Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in numerous state government departments to college, community college, graduate and law students who are permanent residents of the State. The Council for Women & Youth Involvement, an advocacy agency within the North Carolina Department of Administration, coordinates the program. Examples of internships include positions with the Governor’s offices, interns for the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, Legislative Research Assistants, various positions with State museums, aquariums, hospitals, and several others from the coast to the mountains. This program provides opportunities for most academic majors.

The Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCU) and Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) Internship is a paid, ten week program designed to expose, engage, and educate students by providing tangible, real world experiences working with various offices within the NC Department of Transportation. The program prepares students attending an HBCU/MIHE with the knowledge, resources, and expertise necessary to apply for future positions with NCDOT and/or other professions. Essential components of the internship experience include professional development workshops in areas such as soft skills, resume building, LinkedIn, and networking. Students will receive exposure to the inner workings of statewide projects and initiatives throughout NCDOT’s 14 divisions. The program is open to all students who are North Carolina residents attending an identified HBCU/MIHE. Examples of internships include positions with the Chief Deputy Secretary’s office, Department of Motor Vehicle’s Information Technology branch, Department of Aviation, Information Technology, Rail Division, Department of Highways, Office of Human Resources, Office of the Inspector General, and the Office of Legal Counsel. This program presents opportunities for a variety of academic majors.

The Public Transportation Apprentices progam offers work experience and learning opportunities for college seniors who will earn a Bachelor’s degree and have the desire to work in the field of public transportation. The program provides exposure to all aspects of a transit system, allowing apprentices to gain experience in public transportation operations. It develops a pool of qualified individuals for the future of the state’s public transportation industry. A 12-month commitment is required.
