These are some facts and figures about US-based and international shopping malls:

  • Escalators in shopping malls are placed in a special way to make shoppers pass as many stores as possible.
  • An average shopper spends about $75 during each of his/her one hour visit.
  • Mall of America is one of the largest malls in the US. It is large enough to fit seven Yankee stadiums within its walls.
  • The largest mall in North America, the West Edmonton Mall, employes over 23,000 people and includes 800 storefronts, a waterpark, and several attractions.
  • The largest shopping mall on the planet based on total area is The Dubai Mall, it is part of $20 billion Burj Khalifa complex and includes 1,200 shops  at its 12.1 million square feet of space. It is also considered to be sixth largest mall by gross leasable area.
  • Shopping mall designers believe that carpets or other soft surfaces make customers feel at home, and the click of heels sound on polished floor, attracts more women, thus, inspiring them to shop and spend more money.
  • Most shopping malls use tried-and-true tactic by renovating food courts, bringing more local eateries or even high-end restaurants and making customers stick around for longer time. Shoppers spend around 20% more in the malls with better food courts.
