Randolph’s Big Second Half Leads Shaw Past Saint Augustine’s
RALEIGH, NC – Junior Derrick Randolph scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half to help lift the Shaw University men’s basketball team to a 76-68 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division victory Saturday afternoon at Emery Gymnasium. The Bears (13-12, 8-8 CIAA) improve to 7-3 in the division standings while SAU (8-16, 5-11 CIAA) falls to 3-7 within the South.
Randolph collected eight rebounds, three steals and two assists while freshman Geremy Taylor added 13 points and both juniors DaVaughn Kelsie and Davon Dillard contributed 11 points apiece in the win.
For the contest, Shaw held a 24-17 ratio in points off turnovers, 26-22 in the paint and 12-11 in second chances. The Bears shot 47.3-percent from the field, connecting 9-of-17 3-pointers and 83.3-percent from the charity stripe.
The Bears struggled early on in the first half, the Falcons led by as many 12 points – taking a 41-29 lead at halftime on 46.7-percent shooting and 8-of-10 shooting from long distance led by Dante Edwards who tallied 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point land.
In the second half, Shaw clawed its way back after facing a double digit deficit when the Bears orchestrated a 27-12 run which led to a 61-61 tie on a layup from Randolph with 6:37 left. The Bears took the lead for the first time since the first half with another layup from Randolph that ignited a 10-0 run for Shaw that would create a 74-63 stand and ultimately the game as the Bears topped off the win with a layup from sophomore Richard Shout in the final seconds.
Saint Augustine’s was led by Tyre Gathright with 19 points and five rebounds, Edwards finished with 19 points while Jalen Gaddy added 13 points and Craig McDaniel contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaw will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Fayetteville State University for a CIAA division contest at 8 p.m.
