Raleigh, NC – Myles of Great Hopes (MoGH) is an International 501(c)(3) nonprofit public organization with the clear purpose of serving communities globally and in Kenya. To support this work, MoGH will host the MoGH Winter Gala on Saturday Feb. 23rd at the Knights of Columbus Club Event Center (4301 Columbus Club Dr – Raleigh NC), featuring dancing, authentic Kenyan food, and live music. The guest speaker is Jeanne Tedrow, President of the NC Center for Nonprofits.

“Some soft and sharp internal voices kept reminding me I had the ability to stand in the gap even for one child, one family, or one needy school and help change the dynamics for the better,” said Kuria. “I had a good job, my life was settling well in America, but I just couldn’t help, my spirit was looking back to where I came from, and I had to roll my sleeves. This is how Myles of Great Hopes started.”

Myles of Great Hopes was founded in 2009 and officially launched in October at Cameroon Village Library by its Founder and President Isaac Kuria, a resident in Raleigh and a Kenyan citizen. MoGH leadership embraces all volunteer board members including the chair. To remain effective and relevant, MoGH has its committee in Raleigh, NC as well as Nairobi, Kenya.

In 2009 after Kuria’s son was born, he founded Myles of Great Hopes for the purpose of giving back to society through water, health and education. He had procrastinated with the idea of seriously making an impact, but seeing the needs of his son and how much water he required for his care had him very concerned of similar cases in remote and dry areas in Kenya.

This was a life changing moment for Kuria. For the first time in history, he had the pleasure of changing his son’s diaper, but the question was, what about those mothers with similar little babies with no diapers and the cloth towels required to wash them? Some of his concerns were the incredible long distances some mothers and young children had to walk to fetch water. The water available was unsanitary for home use such as cooking, drinking, and care of newborns, just like his son. These reflections strongly affected him.

MoGH has propelled forward and achieved some milestones in the community addressing some specific things.  Provision of Clean Water remains the top most priority and through that, Education and Health are addressed.

MoGH is a diverse group of individuals. They are mothers, fathers, students, teachers, travelers, athletes, designers, engineers, researchers, and more. They are leaders, change makers and citizens of the world.

The driving vision on MoGH is crystal clear: To Revive, Empower and Sustain Hopes for impoverished communities based on Clean Water, which leads to Sanitation Health, additional Health and Educational Support.

Engaged locally here in RTP

KenyaIn the last nine years, MoGH has registered growth from inception of a dream in mind, to a thriving organization with volunteer board members from more than eleven countries!

Kuria says, “We applaud diversity of age, gender, and ideas. We are a team-based organization and obtain satisfaction from the faces of the numerous people who have benefited from our projects. In the Raleigh/Triangle area, we have shared our MoGH story with thousands of people and counting. We have presented Kenya, not only as a country faced with challenges that make our causes, but a destination known as the “Cradle of Human Kind,” the home of Big Five (animals big-game hunters track – lion, elephant, cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros), the home of world renowned marathoners and world class leaders. We are reminded however, that no country is an island. Fortunately, MoGH stands as a credible partner for current and long-term partnerships in our attempt to meet some of these issues.”

In addition to the Winter Gala, MoGH has an annual Walk for Water for Kenya 5K Family Fun Run.

Main Focus

MoGH’s primary focus is to identify and assess abandoned wells in hopes of restoring them for underserved communities in Kenya. Given the limited resources, their belief is that restoring existing wells is an effective and immediate strategy that benefits a larger number of affected communities.

According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the estimates of water supply in Kenya indicate that only about 56% of the population has access to safe water. Approximately 80% of hospital attendance in Kenya is due to preventable diseases, and appoximately 50% of these illnesses are water, sanitation, and hygiene related cases.

At Myles of Great Hopes (MoGH), they strive to be part of the solution by living their mission, vision, and values. In addition, they support Kenya’s vision to improve the nation’s water quality conditions and empower the underserved communities for today’s generation and generations to come. MoGH actively seeks out resources to help achieve their goals.
