SM: What is your genre?

AC: Genre would be soul/R&B, singer/songwriter.

SM: How did you get started?

AC: I got started singing at the age of 6 in my church youth choir, and I drew my first fashion design book in the 5th grade. I was always into fashion/modeling/singing my entire life. I went to North Carolina Central University and that is when I started to model. I served in one of the modeling troupes with Miss Bon Vivant fashion society and I spent a year as a textiles major. I ended up graduating with a mass communications degree. After I graduated, I then started to take on a music career and began singing in local music halls and shows.

SM: Who are your musical or artistic influences?

AC: My biggest music influencer is Lauryn Hill, Lianne La Havas, and Erykah Badu.  I have been a fan of Lauryn Hill since age 5. I will never forget the first time I really connected with music was listening to “Killing Me Softly” riding in my older brothers car on the way home. Also Lianne La Havas is a songstress and guitarist who has such a beautiful voice. Her style of music is contemporary and she does a great job of telling stories through her music and completely in captivating her audience and listeners. Lastly I love the soul/R&B vibe that Erykah Badu brings in her music. She always has the dopest bass lines and whatever key she usually sings in, is the same key I feel comfortable in.

SM: Do you have any upcoming projects, shows, or appearances? What are your next steps?

AC: I am planning some big things this year! Last year I walked in the final collection show for Durham Runaway and I also got a chance to walk in LA Fashion Week. Last year I got the opportunity to perform with members of the band Tha Materials. This year I plan to do more singer/songwriter performances with my guitar.

My co-host (Cerissa Dewberry) and I started an uplifting YouTube channel called “ServeLight” and with that I plan on allowing that to be a platform to getting more into the mentoring roles and helping younger artist and youth find their “it factor” and to encourage them to serve their “light” meaning talents, gifts, passions etc. Hopefully I will start model walk workshops, creative workshops, and so on.

I am also hosting a POP UP SHOP BLOCK PARTY! on March 23rd which will be held at The Mothership (401 W. Geer St, Durham, NC) with an after party across the street at the Living Arts Collective (410 W. Geer St, Durham, NC). This event is sponsored by the Living Arts Collective, DOPEBECAUSEWESAID and The Mothership. It’s a free event and the after party is $10.

Lastly for upcoming shows: I will be performing an original piece at this year’s Never Quit Gala on June 2, 2019 at Githens Middle School in Durham, NC where they will be giving away a $4,000 scholarship to the Youth in the RDU. This will be hosted by “The Humbled Initiative” by David Garvin, a North Carolina founded non-profit, that is geared toward the serving of underprivileged and underserved communities. The non-profit also hosts the Summer Classic which is designed to bring the surrounding Durham/Raleigh community together under one roof with the game of basketball while honoring the recipients of the T.J. Dunaway Scholarship and raising money for the fight against Leukemia.

I plan on having a showcase of my own as headliner sometime this year. And I am sure I will have more shows coming up in the near future. Thank you so much for the support and I’m just encouraging everyone to spread love!!
