Raleigh, NC – As our country violates human rights and forces migrant children into detention camps where they are abused and neglected, around 100 advocates and activists will hold an energetic protest Tuesday July 2nd at Senator Thom Tillis’ office, where protestors will vocally object to the administration’s inhumane concentration-camp-like facilities at the Southern border.

Six migrant children have died in U.S. custody since last year. Last month, four toddlers were found so severely ill and neglected at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, that lawyers had to force the government to hospitalize them, according to a HuffPost report.

Migrant children are sleeping on concrete floors with no access to soap or toothbrushes, according to a June 2019 article on ABCNews.com. A doctor compared the conditions he saw at two Texas children camps to “torture facilities.”

A recent ABC News article reported that 900 people were being held at an El Paso facility with a 125-person capacity, with some detainees forced to live in standing-room-only conditions for days or weeks. Even more sickening, a recent Health and Human Services report revealed that thousands of minors over a four-year period reported sexual abuse while in U.S. custody.

Why are these torture facilities that resemble concentration camps allowed to continue? Why aren’t our officials putting a stop to these human rights horrors? An April 2019 Forbes.com article hints at why: Many detention centers are private operations connected to the Trump administration, and they are profiting off the abuse of migrant children.

“We won’t be silent as this campaign of terror is carried out on children, their parents, and others trying to escape extreme poverty and violence,” said Eliazar Posada, Community Engagement & Advocacy – El Centro Hispano. “Given the dangerous and abusive environment at these camps, we demand Sen. Tillis call to stop the atrocities against migrants, close the detention camps, and release the children to the safety of their parent(s) or a US relative. Our speakers will be available to answer questions.”
