[Watch] DPS Superintendent Mubenga Details Back-To-School With Remote Instruction
Durham, NC – It’s “Back-to-School” for Durham students. This year, however, looks a little different for families and teachers. Instead of preparing to enter school buildings, students will report to virtual classrooms connecting with teachers through Zoom calls and online learning platforms.
Durham Public Schools (DPS) will begin the 2020-21 school year with remote instruction for the first 9 weeks of school. DPS Superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga joins host Phyllis Coley on the web series “PC Politics” to discuss, in detail, the process for reopening the system’s schools. Watch this ‘Real, Raw & Relevant‘ back-to-school with virtual classrooms’ conversation below.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the Durham community, the DPS Board of Education voted unanimously to start the school year under Plan C to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Although the start of the school year is at a distance, DPS is prepared to provide a quality educational experience for students. Learning this fall will be different from what families experienced at the end of the last school year. During the spring and summer, DPS has worked to reshape remote learning to provide the necessary structure for students to learn and grow. In addition, the staff has assembled resources and information to support families while learning remotely.
On the DPS website, families can visit the Back to School section, which offers information about enrollment, sample remote learning schedules, technology resources for students and parents, video tutorials, frequently asked questions, and more. Here’s what else you should know.

DPS is committed to making this school year successful for students and families. Teachers and administrators are excited to welcome students back-to-school to ignite their limitless potential for learning. While the year doesn’t look like many anticipate, Durham’s students will continue to grow and thrive. #WeAreStillDPS
