PHE, Inc., Orange Habitat Youth Council Build Home In Hillsborough’s Fairview Community
CHAPEL HILL, NC – For the third year in a row, PHE, Inc. of Hillsborough will provide $50,000 to sponsor a Habitat home in the Fairview community. PHE typically builds a home in partnership with the “Hands for Habitat” program, where students at Orange High School learn construction skills and build a Habitat home as part of their coursework. Even though the “Hands for Habitat” program is on temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causing Orange County Schools high school students to continue with remote learning for the Fall semester, the generous investment from PHE will ensure the home can still be built as planned.
“PHE is proud to once again be a part of our local Habitat for Humanity program,” said Chad Davis, Director of Marketing for PHE, Inc. “While this year has led to some unforeseen challenges, it’s amazing to see our community can still come together for the greater good and do something extraordinary.”
Fearing that the empty lot in the Fairview Neighborhood in Hillsborough would go without volunteers to build the home, local high school students are grabbing hammers and getting to work. The Youth Council of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, a club made up of students from Carrboro, Cedar Ridge, Chapel Hill, and East Chapel Hill High Schools, are working together through their extra-curricular club to make sure the Rugabo family’s home is built on time. Volunteers have already completed tasks including subfloor and exterior wall framing and plan on volunteering until the home is completed around Summer 2021.
“I wanted to help build this home to show people that no matter your age you can still have a huge impact on your local community,” said Allie Miner, a Junior at Eno River Academy and club member. “It’s so exciting to see a group of high school students working together towards a common goal.”
The Youth Council is also helping to raise money towards the full $85,000 cost of construction materials for the home. To support the work of the Orange Habitat Youth Council, visit https://www.orangehabitat.org/youthunited.
