DURHAM, NC – As a professional organization, Central Carolina Black Nurses Council (CCBNC) is dedicated to activities designed to help African-Americans and minority groups achieve greater access to health care. In this episode of #SpecMagShorts, Bertha Williams, President of CCBNC, talks with Health Columnist Santisha Walker, Registered Nurse and Certified Wellness Coach, about the organization’s endeavors in the local community and the celebration of the 30th anniversary of their annual Lecture-Luncheon. In1990 CCBNC started an annual Lecture-Luncheon in December to provide current information on health issues to nurses, consumers, and other health care providers. Also, the organization awards scholarships to nursing students to increase the number of minority nurses.

Founded by Dorothy Davis Cox Fisher in 1982, CCBNC’s mission is to mirror the vision and philosophy of the National Black Nurses Association and tailor it to the needs of the local community. Since their inception, they have added two additional chapters in North Carolina serving the southern and triad areas. CCBNC was chartered as a branch of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) which was founded in 1971.

CCBNC has played a vital role in partnering with local organizations to help bring light to health topics, specifically related to the African American community, with an overall goal of decreasing health disparities for minorities. From online education to health fairs, wellness screenings, hosting food banks, and any other way they can positively influence the health and wellbeing of the community, the organization strives to maintain its momentum even during the current COVID pandemic.

When asked how CCBNC has adapted to the needs of the community during this time, Williams mentioned their initiative earlier this year to ensure adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), specifically masks, was available to the public. In essence, she explains they do what they can as nurses and healthcare workers to serve as a valuable resource and liaison for the community.

CCBNC is an organization on the move and will be around for years to come. Williams brings to light their dynamic group of nurses currently serving as members and mentioned they are always open to bringing on new members to assist in carrying out their mission.
