REVIEW

PRETTY

Mykah and Michael (Hilson and Williams) are twin siblings who grew up with Jeanné (Winans) after the passing of their parents. As adults, each character is going through a personal struggle. Mykah is single and has been out of the dating scene for a long time. Even though she is open to finding someone new, she is rusty and needs a lot of help and guidance.

Jeanné is healing from a bad marriage and divorce which ended a couple of years prior. She believes she is over it, but her feelings and actions still show her pain. Different from Mykah, Jeanné focuses on her business and is not ready to date new people. Michael is a successful lawyer and an amazing catch for any single woman. He is known to date different women but has not been in a serious relationship worth mentioning. Michael has an interest in Jeanné but recognizes she is not ready to move past her pain. Aisha and Amma (Burke and Singleton) are partners looking to adopt a baby together.

Hilson, Burke, and Singleton did a good job in their roles. Keri Hilson’s character came across as a bit “dry”, due to the character’s personality, but could have been better. Burke and Singleton were entertaining to watch, but the storyline of their love partnership could have been better portrayed and a bit more detailed in the film. Deborah Joy Winans and Rederick Williams’ love story was the most interesting part of the movie. Winans did an excellent job going through different emotions and mental stress trying to overcome her past. Williams was great as well, giving clear hints of his interest in Jeanné (Winans) while also being patient and understanding.

The film is full of life lessons, and trial and error situations. It lists the do’s and don’ts of dating and the generational changes of how dating has transformed through the years. The story was clear and easy to follow. It is a feel-good film, but missing a bit of drama and grand victory for certain characters. Although the movie was clear, colorful, and appropriate for the times, the actual script could have been better. Filming and wardrobe were great and current. I would rate this film with 4 out of 5 stars.

This movie would be great to watch with any group of friends, helping with emotional support in different situations. The TV ONE film DON’T WASTE YOUR PRETTY premieres this Sunday, February 28th at 8 pm.
