Duke Drops 7-1 Decision at No. 19 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Duke baseball team dropped game three of the ACC series at No. 19 Miami, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Stadium in Coral Gables, Florida.

Graduate Student Chase Cheek and senior Michael Rothenberg led the Blue Devils at the plate as they each finished 1-for-3 with a double. Cheek also recorded an RBI while Rothenberg scored his 13th run of the season.

Junior Jack Carey made his team-leading seventh start on the mound for the Blue Devils and dipped to 1-1 this season. The Summit, N.J., native dealt 4.1 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and three walks. Carey also recorded three strikeouts during his time on the hill.

Duke broke open the scoring in the top of the fifth as Rothenberg doubled to lead off the frame before Cheek drove him home with a double to right field two batters later to give Duke a 1-0 lead.

Miami (16-8, 10-7 ACC) responded with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead and added four more in the eighth to make it, 7-1.

Sophomore Marcus Johnson made his 12th appearance of the season, allowing one earned run on one hit in 2.2 innings of work. A native of Fontana, Calif., Johnson also struck out two.

Duke (11-13, 5-10 ACC) returns to Durham for a midweek matchup with cross-town rival North Carolina Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
