Blue Devils, Weather Downs UNC in Game One

CHAPEL HILL, NC – After a rainy start to Friday night’s game, The Duke Blue Devils downed the North Carolina Tar Heels 4-2 in Boshamer Stadium for the first of a three-game series in Chapel Hill.

This series marks the 300th time that the Tar Heels have met their cross-town rivals on the ball field since 1891.

For the first game in the series, the Heels started the righty, Austin Love, on the mound, while Duke went with their big right-hander: Cooper Stinson. The Junior has been pitching well for the Blue Devils, leading the ACC in hits per game this season at 5.40, as well as opponent batting average, holding opposing batters to .173 when he’s on the mound.

Coming into this series, Stinson has only allowed 17 hits this season, walked 16, and struck out 23. He’s not a big strikeout pitcher and control has been an issue this season, but his ability to keep batters off the bag has been a blessing for the Blue Devils defensively.  But on Saturday, Stinson was pulled from the mound early, after striking out 2 of the 7 batters he faced.

On Friday, UNC Senior outfielder, Dallas Tesser, stole an extra-base hit from the Blue Devils with an amazing grab to start the 2nd. But despite the acrobatic defensive play, Duke had the bats rolling early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead, right before a weather delay pushed the game to resume the next day.

On Saturday, the Blue Devils (12-13 ACC)  picked right back up where they left off, extending their lead to 4-0 with a two-run homer from Peter Matt.

Carolina (15-13 ACC) managed to drive in only two runs: Justice Thompson scored on an RBI single from Tomas Frick and Mike Madej reached home in the 9th on an error from Duke’s third baseman, Erikson Nichols.  Duke would go on to win the first game of the series, 4-2, against the Tar Heels.

The loss put Austin Love at 4-2 on the season, as Henry Williams (3-3) gets the win for Duke in their first outing against the Tar Heels.

The Duke Blue Devils will go on to play the Campbell Camels in the Durham Bulls Athletic Park after this three-game series. For the Tar Heels, they will be facing the Charlotte 49’ers in Bashamer Stadium, concluding their four-game homestand.
