Pack 9 Finishes Weekend Series With A Clean Sweep

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina State returned to the Doak Field at 4 PM to finish out the series and play game two of the doubleheader Sunday, April 25th. Matt Willadsen started on the mound for the Pack in game two pitching 6.0 shutout innings while the NC State baseball (19-13, 12-12 ACC) offense secured a 7-6 win over Virginia Tech (21-15, 15-12 ACC) to finish off the weekend series.

After a scoreless first inning and two back to back runs from the Hokies (TJ Rumfield and Cade Swisher), the Pack struck first when shortstop Jose Torres doubled to right field, followed by an RBI double from right fielder Devonte Brown bringing Torres in for the first run of the game (2-1). 

Tyer McDonough homered to right field in the third and Torres came back with another double in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Vojtech Mensik and J.T. Jarrett helped Torres advance home, closing the gap and bringing the score to 4-3 going into the top of the fifth. 

After a wall-ball double from TJ Rumfield, the lead was back to two for the Hokies (5-3) in the top of the fifth. McDonough reacts with his second home run of the game taking Virginia Tech back down to a one-point lead (5-4).

With no runs from either team in the sixth, Torres doubled down the left-field line, bringing in runners Luca Tresh and Tyler McDonough. Devonte Brown went up to bat and with a sacrifice fly ball to center field brought in Torres, and the Pack took their first lead of the game; 7-5. 

In the last play of the night Hokie Tanner Shobel;  true freshman homered to left-center field (2nd home run of the game) bringing the score to a one-run game (7-6).  Evan Justice who came in during the 7th inning takes a clean sweep against the 22nd team in the nation; Virginia Tech (7-6). 

Wolfpack shortstop Jose Torres put on a show against the Hokies with three doubles, a triple, and two RBIs in the match-up proving how great a candidate he will be for the upcoming draft that will transpire this summer. Tyler McDonough played tremendously as well finishing the match up with two RBIs and two home runs for the Pack. Now with four solo home runs in two days.

The Pack has now won 10 of 11 games at home, adding on to their now three-game win streak, putting themselves right in the thick of things for postseason play. NC State will take the field again for a midweek game on Tuesday at 4 PM in Winston Salem against the Demon Deacons. For all Wolfpack fans, the game will be broadcasted on ACCX.
