Durham Parks And Recreation Hosts Socially-Distanced Bimbé Celebration Sat. May 15

DURHAM, NC – It’s time for a Bimbé Celebration! Residents will celebrate African and African American history, culture, arts, and traditions with Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) in a socially distanced way this Saturday, May 15, at the Durham County Memorial Stadium Parking Lot (750 Stadium Drive). The event will be held rain or shine.

There will be three sessions in different time slots (11 a.m.-2 p.m., 3 p.m.-6 p.m., or 7 p.m.-10 p.m.). Participants attending any of the sessions will enjoy highlights of our usual Bimbé Festival including great music, speakers, and tasty food from the comfort of their car or allotted space in front of their vehicle. While outdoor mask use is no longer required, it is still recommended — especially in situations where social distancing cannot be maintained.

The Bimbé Celebration schedule is packed! Check out the full line-up and learn more about the Performers and Speakers on their website. Feel free to pack your own picnic or bring your appetite and enjoy some delicious treats from local food trucks including Tropical Delights, R&B Grill and Concession, Levy’s Jerkstand and Magnificent Concessions.

At the Bimbé Celebration this year, DPR will be collecting school supplies for those in need in our community. If you are able, please bring an item from each person in your car. These will be collected at check-in. This is not required but we hope to collect a bounty of supplies to share with those in need. Any school supplies will be accepted but the following items are the most needed:

  • Spiral Notebooks
  • Pencils
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils

Pre-registration was required and all spaces are sold out.  Though you may not have secured a spot at the Celebration, residents can enjoy the festivities from home by joining us online from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. via YouTube Live!
