Cole Williams: A Staple for NCCU Defense

DURHAM, NC- A defensive force is emerging as one of the most prolific tacklers in the MEAC at NCCU. In addition, linebacker, Cole Williams, is establishing himself as a defensive focal point for his team.

Williams, a redshirt sophomore, is a transfer from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. From my findings, he never played a snap for the school, but that did not stop NCCU from picking up the hidden gem in 2019.

Williams did not receive much action upon first arriving at Durham. In truth, none at all. From the looks of it, Williams’ first football game since high school was at Alcorn State.

If there was rust, it has not shown itself yet. In just three games, Williams has recorded 27 total tackles and two pass deflections. Extremely impressive for someone who hasn’t seen a lot of action.

“He’s a high-intensity guy,” said coach Trei Oliver. Oliver went on to comment on Williams’ maturity and how he’s a dominant presence. “He’s somewhat contagious. When guys are around him, they step their game up,” Continued Oliver.

The way Williams flies around the field is nothing short of impressive, and it is a part of his game. This year, the defense has been a point of emphasis, and the big hit, sacks, and new pieces have shown that.

When asked about the jump on defense, Coach Oliver said, “First and foremost, our effort has improved. I think we’re doing a good job getting hats to the football, but we still have a ways to go.”

Oliver has made it clear that this team can compete but still has work to do. Durham is buzzing to see the potential of this team, and players like Williams will help, especially when going up against NC A&T this weekend. I guess we will have to wait and see how high those Eagles can fly.
