Shaw University Featured in National McDonald’s Commercial (Airing Now)

RALEIGH, NC – Shaw University and its “Platinum Sound” marching band are featured in a McDonald’s advertising campaign that shows McDonald’s as the unofficial student union (but, with fries) near campus.

The commercial also portrays the powerful ShawU HBCU legacy and features some of the university’s Platinum Sound band members, football players, and alumna Vanessa Lovette Barnes-Hammond (’93) and her legacy son Dave (’25). She played saxophone, and Dave now plays sax in the Platinum Sound.

The ad began airing nationally and on social media outlets the first week of December 2021.

Like the student union…but with fries

  1. This means EVERYTHING to me because Shaw U is so underrated. It’s the OLDEST HBCU in the South. Not to mention that ALL of the other HBCU’s stemmed from Shaw! I’m sooo…PROUD that they have finally received recognition and given their flowers. #PROUD Shaw U Alumni 🥰
