NC State Dismantles Crosstown Rival UNCG
RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State Wolfpack baseball team scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 20-2 victory over the UNCG Spartans in their final week of regular-season competition.
This is the second meeting between the two clubs as the teams last met in Greensboro on March 8th and NC State won 13-5.
The Wolfpack (33-17, 14-12 ACC) came out scorching, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first. Noah Soles and Jacob Cozart got things started for NC State with line drives to left and right field which brought in three total runs. On the next at-bats, LuJames Groover III and JT Jarrett crushed two three-run homers, giving the Wolfpack a 9-0 lead after one.
Spartans (25-27, 9-9 Southern) pitcher Zack Mallia received his second loss of the year after giving up 5 runs and walking 3 batters facing 6 batters total.
The Wolfpack brought in 11 more runs in the next six innings following a three-run home run from freshman Tommy White and solo from Dominic Pilolli. Errors made by the UNCG bullpen as well as RBIs from Jarrett and Soles made the score even more lopsided by the Top of the 7th.
NC State RHP Justin Lawson recorded his fifth win of the year after striking out five batters in three innings, bringing his season record to 5-3.
NC State now welcomes ACC crosstown rival Wake Forest for a three-game series starting Thursday from May 19-21 in Doak Field at Dail Park.
