Rocky Mount Prep and Ripple Effects Partner to R.E.S.E.T. Expectations for Scholars

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Rocky Mount Prep was chartered in 1997 to provide students in this region with a “world-class education.” In serving this mission, the leadership at Rocky Mount Prep realizes the necessity of world-class education and the reality of the “whole child” educated in the process. Therefore, Rocky Mount Prep has partnered with Ripple Effects to provide a restorative opportunity for scholars who made decisions or mistakes that warranted removal from the school environment.

“I heard Dr. Kiesha Spivey speak about the work of Ripple Effects and their mission to help people break destructive cycles. So I asked her to consider working with a group of our scholars,” said Rocky Mount Prep Superintendent Dr. Chaunte Garrett. “The Ripple Effects Student Engagement Taskforce (RESET) is a true mission-aligned opportunity for us to provide equitable learning opportunities and collaborate with families and communities.”

In the RESET program, scholars that are long-term suspended from school receive support services from Ripple Effects rather than being sent home to work. In addition, Ripple Effects provides RESET scholars with a teacher to support their academics.

“We are in contact weekly around scholar needs and their progress,” says Dr. Garrett. “Our team members provide support alongside everything Ripple Effects offers.”

In addition, RESET scholars experience daylong therapeutic opportunities to correct the choices that resulted in their suspension and the other aspects of their lives. Ripple Effects also provides mentorship and prepares home-cooked meals with love throughout the week.

“This partnership is an opportunity to create new beginnings for students at pivotal points in their lives,” said Ripple Effects Founder and Executive Director Dr. Keisha Spivey. “It’s our job to encourage them to hit the RESET button and finish strong.”

Ripple Effects celebrates scholars’ success by providing various incentives such as pizza parties, bowling trips, and movie theater outings. In addition, Ripple Effects hosted an End of the Year celebration for the scholars providing them with accolades and keys for success.

“My grandson has grown and matured since coming to this place,” stated a grandparent of one of the RESET scholars while attending the celebration. “Thank you for giving him a second chance and making him feel special.”

RESET scholars are engaged in the various community service and empowerment opportunities arranged by Ripple Effects.

“It has been more than a program. It’s been a blessing. Our scholars are flourishing,” says Dr. Garrett. “It is great to have Dr. Spivey onboard to assist us in educating, equipping, and empowering each scholar to excel academically.”
