Morgan State WBB Clutched A Comeback Win Over NC Central
Durham, NC — The North Carolina Central women’s basketball team faced off against Morgan State in the Mclendon-McDougald Arena at 2 pm on Saturday, Feb 11. The Bears improved to 15-6 after the 68-63 road win against NC Central.
Morgan State almost went under after nearly missing all of their threes close to the end of regulation. North Carolina Central started lacking on defense, the team had 4 fouls with 2:49 left on the clock.
At the half, the Eagles had a 35-31 lead. NCCU totaled 10 team fouls and 8 TO in 1st half.
NCCU opened half shooting 3-of-4 from the field. Eagles guard Morgan Callahan started to heat up in the beginning of the 2nd half after going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and hitting a mid-range jumper; she got an assist from a Jerni Kiaku bucket.
In the second half, NCCU’s zone defense was telling the Bears to shoot the three but that’s because they were 1-20 at that point. Callahan scored on a fast break to give NCCU a 10-point 47-37 lead. With 3 minutes left in the 3rd, Morgan State started to hustle harder than before. They ran a full-court press, forcing unnecessary turnovers on the Eagles’ behalf. The Bears just hustled harder than the Eagles, nevertheless, they ended the half shooting just 1-13 field goals.
At the five-minute mark in the 4th, the bears hit two daggers at the three and a jumper. Morgan State held down an 8-0 run for 2 min and tied the game 61 even with 4:03 on the clock. Central’s final effort was to get Morgan to switch on defense to get a favorable matchup but ended up getting their 18th TO of the game. With a minute left, MSU Bears took a 68-63 lead over NCCU.
NCCU will next play Coppin State in the McDouglad-McLendon Arena on Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 pm.
