Duke WBB Improves To 12-2 In ACC With Win Over Miami
DURHAM, NC — Duke leading scorer Reigan Richardson drops 14 to lead Duke Blue Devil’s Women’s basketball team past the Miami Hurricanes 50-40 on Super Bowl Sunday at the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Blue Devils (22-3, 12-2 ACC) guard Reigan Richardson went 2 for 3 from the 3-point line despite not having the most impressive three-point percentage. Richardson says “my teammates look for me on the three-point line and I feel comfortable with the shot”.
Miami (16-9, 9-5 ACC) had something to prove after knocking off Florida State University but could not hold it down tonight which could hurt them in this second half of straight ACC matchups.
In the second period, Duke forward Kennedy Brown set the tone off the low block, Brown gave Duke a 10-point lead after hitting a face-up jumper for her sixth point of the game.
Duke held Miami to 23.8% from the court only hitting 5 of 21 shots. Shayeann Day-Wilson hit a walk-off buzzer-beater three to end the half. Duke went on a 9-0 run for the last 3:45 of the first half.
Duke got 15 points off turnovers this game and limited their offensive turnovers. Coach Kara Lawson says her team won off their discipline and aggressiveness for offensive rebounds.
Duke continued to dominate in the second half, though late in the second half the Canes were able to cut the Blue Devil’s lead down to 10. The Blue Devils went on a 7-minute stretch without a bucket.
Miami head coach Katie Meier started to give Duke a different look on defense which was confusing for Duke’s guards. Coach Meier says she regrets not switching the defense up earlier. Duke head coach Kara Lawson is up two wins to one against Coach Katie Meier since joining Duke in 2021.
The Miami Hurricanes were led by sophomore guard Jasmyne Roberts who finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds.
Duke travels to Virginia on Thursday, February 16 at 7 pm to face the Virginia Tech Hokies at the Cassell Coliseum.
