Durham Police File Petitions For Nine Juveniles in String of Vehicle Break-ins and Thefts
DURHAM, NC – Durham Police investigators have filed juvenile petitions for nine juveniles in connection with a string of motor vehicle break-ins and thefts that have occurred in different parts of the city since late June.
Investigators have identified two different groups of juveniles who are believed to be responsible for multiple stolen vehicles and dozens of motor vehicle break-ins that occurred between June 27th and July 24th. The first group of juveniles is facing charges in connection to incidents that have mostly occurred at apartment complexes in the downtown area and at other locations in the city. The second group is facing charges in connection with incidents at apartment complexes in southeast Durham along the Interstate 540 corridor.
Investigators are working with Juvenile Justice to place these juveniles in secure custody.
Both groups have also been tied to motor vehicle thefts and break-ins in Raleigh, Cary, Wendell, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and on North Carolina Central University’s Campus. Multiple juvenile petitions have been filed on some of the same juveniles in Wake and Orange Counties.

Our investigators are working closely with Raleigh Police, Chapel Hill Police, Carrboro Police, Cary Police, Morrisville Police, Wendell Police, and Franklinton Police to file charges against those who are responsible for these incidents.
The Durham Police Department is asking community members to remember to secure their vehicles, park in well-lit areas, and remove spare car keys, valuables, and firearms from their vehicles. Please report any suspicious activity to 911.
