Todd, Boston College Down Clemson in ACC Tourney 1st Round

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – Boston College flipped the regular-season script versus Clemson impressively on Wednesday, pulling away for an 85-72 win in the opening game of the 47th annual Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum.

T’yana Todd went 5-for-6 from 3-point range and led four Eagles in double figures with a career-high 24 points as 13th-seeded BC (14-18) earned a spot opposite No. 5 seed Louisville (23-8) in Thursday’s 11 a.m. second-round game.

Boston College, which dropped a 65-55 decision to the Tigers when the teams met at Clemson on Feb.1, built a 17-point lead with 1:44 remaining in the third quarter of Wednesday’s game and appeared to have the rematch well in hand.

But the 12th-seeded Tigers (12-19) weren’t finished. Dayshanette Harris, who matched teammate Ruby Whitehorn for game-high scoring honors with 26 points, led a furious rally to bring the Tigers back to within 70-66 with 5:28 still remaining in the game.

But the Eagles countered with five unanswered points from Teya Sidberry on a rebound follow shot and a 3-pointer from the left wing. Clemson was unable to pull closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Sidberry finished with 20 points and led all rebounders with 10. Dontavia Waggoner added 18 points for Boston College, and Andrea Daley scored 13. The Eagles had 22 assists – including 12 by Kaylah Ivey for the second game in a row – on 32 made field goals.

Harris scored nine straight points to key Clemson’s late rally, and Whitehorn finished 12-for-16 from the floor. Fifth-year senior Amari Robinson scored 15 points in her final game as a Tiger and added a team-high seven rebounds.

The Eagles grabbed a 23-13 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes while shooting 56 percent from the floor and forcing seven Clemson turnovers. Todd paced Boston College with eight first-quarter points, and Sidberry and Waggoner added six each.

Todd had 16 points at the half, which ended with the Eagles still in front, 42-34. Waggoner added 11 for Boston College, which scored 20 first-half points off 10 Clemson turnovers.

Three players – Whitehorn (16 points), Harris (11) and Robinson (7) – accounted for all of the Tigers’ first-half scoring.

Boston College will carry a three-game winning streak into Thursday morning’s game against Louisville. The Eagles dropped an 88-60 decision on the Cardinals’ home floor in the regular-season meeting Jan. 25.
