Beta Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Celebrates 100 Years of Brotherhood, Service in Durham

DURHAM, NC – The Beta Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, has continued to be instrumental in shaping Durham since its charter in 1924. Their members have been leaders of “Black Wall Street,” North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Mutual Savings and Loans, and Mechanics & Farmers Bank, to name a few.

Beta Phi is known throughout Durham for its long, rich, and storied history. Countless Durham leaders, including R.N. Harris, W.D. Hill, John H. Wheeler, John “Shag” Stewart, Richard L. McDougald, Leroy T. Walker, W.G. Pearson, W.J. Kennedy, C.C. Spaulding, Jr., Dr. John H. Lucas, and Henry M. Michaux, Jr., have been members of this chapter, then and now. Many of them have public spaces named in their honor throughout Durham County for their contributions in business, finance, politics, education, activism, religion, entrepreneurship, and youth programs.

Simmons

Two Grand Basilei and one First Vice Grand Basileus were members of Beta Phi. It is a tradition of which the members are justifiably proud as they celebrate their 100th year of Brotherhood and Service in Durham. Kumani Simmons serves as the current Basileus.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the chapter hosted a Centennial Reception on April 11, 2024, at the Durham Armory. The reception officially marked the beginning of a series of events throughout the year, culminating in a grand gala in December 2024. During the reception, they honored the chapter’s rich history, distinguished members, and commitment to its four cardinal principles: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.

More information about the yearlong Centennial Celebration, including a schedule of events, can be found on the chapter’s website: www.betaphi1924.com
