Durham Police Investigate Two Hit-And-Run Crashes Overnight

DURHAM, NC – The Durham Police Department’s Traffic and Crash Team (TACT) is investigating two separate hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians that occurred overnight. One pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash that occurred on North Miami Boulevard on Saturday night (May 4), and another pedestrian was killed in a crash that occurred early Sunday morning on North Roxboro Street. Investigators are seeking information in connection with both crashes.

North Miami Boulevard Crash

At approximately 9:06 p.m. on May 4, 2024, an adult male pedestrian was crossing North Miami Boulevard near Raynor Street when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The vehicle then struck a pole before backing up and fleeing the scene. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Shortly after this crash, it is believed the same suspect vehicle was involved in another crash on Holloway Street near Herbert Street. The suspect in the crash got out of the vehicle briefly before fleeing the scene.

According to witnesses, the suspect vehicle is a dark blue SUV, likely a Jeep Grand Cherokee or similar vehicle registered in North Carolina. The vehicle should have extensive damage, particularly to the front right corner, the hood area, and the back of the vehicle, and several parts may be missing, including a bumper.

North Roxboro Street Crash

At approximately 5:03 a.m. on May 5, 2024, an adult male pedestrian was struck in the 2400 block of North Roxboro Street by an unknown vehicle that was traveling northbound. The driver fled the scene. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

A witness told officers a light grey or light blue Chevy Sonic or similar vehicle may have run over the pedestrian. It is also possible the pedestrian was first struck by another vehicle. That vehicle of interest is believed to be a 2014-2016 Lexus or Toyota sports sedan or similar vehicle that likely has driver-side headlamp damage and is missing a black front bumper hole plug.
