Meals on Wheels Durham Pushes Final Fundraising Effort Ahead of May 29 Gala

DURHAM, N.C. — For hundreds of seniors in Durham, the wait for a daily meal can stretch for months—even years. Now, with momentum building and time running short, Meals on Wheels Durham is making a final push to close a critical funding gap and ensure vulnerable residents don’t go without the support they need.

Campaign Enters Final Phase

Meals on Wheels Durham (MOWD) is calling on the community to help complete its Beyond the Wait campaign, an initiative aimed at reducing senior hunger and long wait times for essential meal services.

Earlier this year, the organization received a $149,000 grant from Meals on Wheels America through the 2026 Meeting Unmet Need initiative, part of a $6 million national effort to combat senior hunger and isolation.

  • The funding allowed MOWD to move 100 homebound seniors off a waitlist
  • The current waitlist still exceeds 600 individuals
  • Average wait times range from 18 to 24 months

However, the grant only provides short-term relief, prompting the launch of a broader fundraising effort.

The Goal: Sustain Critical Services

To maintain meal delivery for those newly served seniors, MOWD is working to raise approximately $300,000.

  • Each meal costs just $11
  • Funds will directly support ongoing meal delivery and wellness check-ins

“Two years is simply too long to wait for a meal,” said Nia Richardson, Director of Communications & Engagement.
“The Gala is our opportunity to finish what we started—together.”

Momentum Builds Through Community Support

Since launching on March 11 with its annual We Can Wednesday giving day, the campaign has gained strong traction:

  • $7,500+ raised on day one
  • The Full Court Press Challenge exceeded expectations, raising more than $31,000
  • Community donations continue through online giving and event participation
