How The AVID Schooling System Brings Equal Opportunities To Disadvantaged Kids
It’s so important to find ways to provide equal opportunities for all children and break outside the bonds of social class. Many people are at a distinct disadvantage in life because of where they grow up, and education is so important in breaking that cycle. Schools that go above and beyond to help all of their students, no matter what their background, are making a huge difference to the lives of the people in their communities.
The AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program was set up to help schools improve their performance and provide better opportunities to their students, helping as many of them secure a place in college and boost their prospects for the future.
The AVID system is a college-readiness system that is put in place from elementary school all the way through postsecondary. It is designed to prepare students for college by improving the overall performance and level of teaching throughout the schools. The first school to be declared an AVID National Demonstration Site was Winnekota High School, under the guidance of Dr. Eric Johnson and more schools around the country are opening their eyes to the benefits of this incredible teaching strategy, using research-based methods.
AVID started in 1980 at Clairemont High School in San Diego. When the school was ordered to desegregate, many inner-city students attended for the first time. The head of English, Mary Catherine Swanson, was happy about the desegregation but she worried about how these new students, who had previously been deprived of good schooling, would keep up. So, she created AVID, an elective class and a philosophy that she would use to help them unlock their full potential.
The idea is that if you hold students to the highest standards while also providing the social and academic support they need, they will grow and develop themselves to meet the ambitious goals you set them. The program started with 32 students in one high school and has since grown, helping over 425,000 students in 48 states.
This program is designed to help all students in a school but its focus is on the students that have the fewest opportunities, which is why it’s so important. The success rate of the AVID program speaks for itself; in 2011, 91% of AVID students that graduated high school planned to go onto college. That is a huge step for children living in underprivileged areas that would not normally get those opportunities. This will have a massive knock-on effect on communities in the future, which is why the AVID program and headteachers like Dr. Eric Johnson who is implementing it in schools, are so vital. Without them, a lot of kids would miss out on amazing chances in life.
When Mary Catherine Swanson created AVID in 1980, she wanted to create equal opportunities for kids in her school. But in the years since, her program has grown and it is now breaking down social barriers across the country and helping kids from all areas get into college and improve their prospects in life.
