Norfolk State Captures MEAC Championship
NORFOLK, V.A. – Norfolk State defeated Coppin State 72 to 57 to win the MEAC Championship.
Norfolk State (23-6) started the game slowly, scoring their first bucket at the 16:34 mark. Up until 3:38 remaining in the first half, the Spartans had committed 11 turnovers and only made six field goals. They were shooting 21% and struggling to get anything going offensively. The Spartans went into the half with a four-point lead over the Eagles.
MEAC Coach of the year, Robert Jones came out making adjustments in the second half. In the first seven minutes of the game, the Spartans ignited a 20-5 run captivated by the defense and easy open looks. The Eagles went out a 6-0 nothing run to come within 10 points, but Norfolk State wasn’t going to let this game slip away.
The Spartans were steaming hot from the field, shooting a stellar 48% from three. They shot 86% from the free-throw line and snagged a total of 41 rebounds. Norfolk State showed that they were the superior team and capitalized on every opportunity.
MEAC player of the year, Joe Bryant Jr. (Norfolk, VA.) contributed 12 points in the first and ended the game with 23 points, four rebounds, and two assists. He played the majority of the game and he gave it his all on both ends of the floor. The unquestioned leader of this team helped this team capture their 2nd straight MEAC championship.
Jalen Hawkins (Bronx, NY.) dished in 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists along with an amazing acting performance, causing a flagrant one foul. Junior Forward, Dana Tate (Boston, MA.) dropped 13 points and 8 eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Norfolk State advances to their 9th postseason in 11 years which will also be their second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. On Mar 13, 2022, The Spartans will find out their opponent in the round of 64.
