NC Central WBB protects the nest with a impressive win over Coppin State
Durham N.C. – The NC Central WBB team put on a defensive performance in their game against the, Coppin State Eagles, in the McDouglald-McLendon Arena.
In Central’s last game against the Morgan State Bears, the maroon and grey gave up a last-minute lead just as they did in their last game against Coppin State (6-17, 2-6 MEAC) this season. Tonight, NC Central made sure they shut down all hope with a 15-point lead.
NCCU’s defense locked up in the first half. Coppin State went 3-31 at the three point line which was confirmation for NCCU coach, Trisha Stafford-Odom, to focus more on CSU’s inside game. NCCU held CSU to single digits through 7:14 in the second quarter. NCCU players Sydney Avoletta and Morgan Callahan were spacing the floor and locking up on defense. Callahan ended the half with 13. NCCU’s Kira Lowery made her presence known by forcing a charge on #22, LaShawna Robinson of CSU. Lowery ended the half with 18.
NCCU stayed dominating in the second half. In the second half, Coppin State went to their top scoring guard, Jewel Watkins (18 points), to hit the three but she shot poorly. She shot 3-12 from the three tonight. On the opposite end of the floor, NCCU forward Tianna Carter scored 14 points this evening. She went 46.7% from the court. Carter said the win was attributed to stopping Coppin State Jalynda Salley from crashing the glass, NCCU beat CSU in rebounds 53-38.
NCCU WBB plays Delaware State Hornets Saturday, February 18th at 2 p.m. at Memorial Hall Gym.
