Duke MBB Starts The Season As Preseason ACC Favorites
DURHAM – Duke men’s basketball has been picked as the preseason favorite for the upcoming 2023-24 ACC season, with sophomore Kyle Filipowski being named Preseason ACC Player of the Year. The conference made the announcement Thursday following a vote by a panel of media.
Filipowski, the reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, was also voted first-team Preseason All-ACC, while classmate Tyrese Proctor was a preseason second-team selection.
Duke, coming off its ACC-record 22nd ACC Tournament title, received 44 of the 51 first-place votes and finished with 757 total points in the preseason order-of-finish vote. Duke leads Miami, North Carolina and Virginia atop the preseason poll.
Filipowski garnered 35 votes for Preseason Player of the Year and was a unanimous first-team selection, receiving all 51 possible votes from the media. The sophomore from Westtown, N.Y., is joined on the preseason first team by Armando Bacot (North Carolina), PJ Hall (Clemson), Reece Beekman (Virginia) and NorchadOmier (Miami).
Proctor earned 24 votes, landing the sophomore on the preseason second team, joining Judah Mintz (Syracuse), Nijel Pack (Miami), Blake Hinson (Pitt) and Quinten Post (Boston College). The Sydney, Australia native also received a vote for Preseason Player of the Year.
Paolo Banchero, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, was the most recent Blue Devil to be named the league’s Preseason Player of the Year.
The Blue Devils, ranked No. 2 in the AP preseason poll, play their lone exhibition game against UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The regular season tips off on Nov. 6, with Duke matching up at home against Dartmouth at 9 p.m.
