NC State wins first ACC game against Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, V.A. – Head Coach Wes Moore wins eighth ACC Opener of his career in the North Carolina State Wolfpack’s 72-61 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in the John Paul Jones Arena.
With the win, NC State improves to 13-0. Virginia falls to 8-4 with the loss.
Tight game early, the Pack and Cavaliers battled throughout the first quarter. The Pack opened the lead after going on a 12-1 run entering the second quarter, 17-10.
The Cavaliers picked up the pace to tie the game at 21 with a jumper from guard Kymora Johnson with 6:42 remaining in the half.
The Cavaliers shifted their momentum to take the lead with 2:48 remaining and closed out the half 32-31.
Forward Camryn Taylor led the Cavaliers with nine points and 10 rebounds at halftime. Center River Baldwin led the Wolfpack with eight points and six rebounds.
On the move again, the Pack regained the lead going into the third quarter on a 7-0 run.
Alot of back-and-forth to close out the third quarter, including three-pointers from guard Saniya Rivers, forward Mimi Collins, and guard Olivia McGhee of the Cavaliers.
NC State extended its lead throughout the half to control the game and seal the victory, 72-61.
The Wolfpack were led by forward Mimi Collins who finished the game with 25 points, five rebounds, and one assist. Center River Baldwin followed with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Saniya Rivers added 10 points and 16 rebounds.
The Cavaliers were led by forward Camryn Taylor who finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds, and two assists. Guard Kymora Johnson followed with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Despite shooting the ball well, there were multiple empty possessions throughout the game for both teams. Virginia was able to capitalize off NC State struggles with ongoing fouls throughout the game.
