Distracted Driver Crashes Into Utility Pole on W Main St., Lies to Police Despite Dashcam Evidence
DURHAM, NC — A distracted driver in Downtown Durham crashed into a utility pole near Torero’s Mexican Restaurant on W. Main Street. Dashcam footage shared by another driver with the username OC captured the incident involving a black Chevrolet Traverse.
The dashcam footage shows a black Chevrolet Traverse driver changing lanes on Duke Street and turning left onto W. Main Street. The Traverse driver cuts the corner too wide and hits a utility pole, causing significant damage to the vehicle’s front end.
Tar Heeler and Redditor /u/BackLeftWindowSeat shared dashcam footage from earlier last week (Sept 21, 2024) from Downtown Durham showing a driver in a Chevrolet Traverse not paying attention after making their left turn, resulting in them crashing into a utility pole.
[OC] They told the cop that they had to swerve to miss oncoming traffic 🤨

The driver with the dashcam, OC, stopped to check on the Traverse driver and waited for the police to arrive.
However, despite having clear evidence from the dashcam footage, the Traverse driver allegedly lied to the police, claiming that they had to swerve to avoid oncoming traffic.
“They told the police they had to swerve to miss oncoming traffic,” OC’s thread title reads.
OC mentioned that the police were not interested in viewing the footage of the distracted driver and only took a statement before allowing OC to leave.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying focused while driving and the dangers of being distracted, even for a split second.
