Durham County Department of Social Services Welcomes New Assistant Director

Williams

DURHAM, NC — Travis Williams, a Tennessee native, has been appointed the new Assistant Director of the Aging and Adult Services Division at the Durham County Department of Social Services (DCoDSS).

With over 20 years of experience in human services, Williams brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He spent nearly a decade at the Tennessee Department of Human Services in Memphis, TN, where he held leadership positions as a Field Supervisor and Program Director. In these roles, he supervised the Families First/TANF, Food Stamps/SNAP, and TennCare/Medicaid programs, overseeing a team of over 200 employees in Shelby County, TN.

In 2019, Williams relocated to Washington, D.C., where he worked at the D.C. Human Services Agency in the Office of Professional Review, Monitoring, and Investigations. His responsibilities included examining compliance cases, monitoring quality control reports, analyzing data, and investigating complex cases.

Before arriving in North Carolina, Williams served as the Program and Operations Manager for the Economic Support and Independence Division at the City of Richmond, VA Department of Social Services. He also became the hiring manager for all Benefits programs.

In 2023, Williams became the Section Chief for economic and Family Services for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Although he was familiar with ensuring services for needy and refugee families, he sought a position focused on the aging population’s needs. Upon discovering the opportunity with Durham County DSS, he felt compelled to apply.

“It may sound cliché, but I really do get a rush knowing that my work makes a positive impact on those we serve in any agency I’ve worked at. I believe in team building, and I am looking forward to serving the citizens of Durham,” Williams stated.

Travis Williams graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and holds an MBA from the University of Memphis. He enjoys reading, traveling, and supporting Tennessee Volunteers Football in his free time.
