Duke Athletics Director Nina King To Join USA Basketball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Duke vice president and director of athletics Nina King has been selected to serve on the 2025-28 USA Basketball Board of Directors. The announcement was made following the USA Basketball annual Board of Directors meeting in Colorado Springs.
King, who started her current role at Duke in May 2021 after 13 years on the department’s executive leadership team, is also on the Board of Directors for the Collegiate Women Sports Awards and was previously the Chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and a member of the NCAA Committee on Institutional Performance.
The 15-member USA Basketball Board of Directors, who will be seated through 2028, also includes NBA appointees Joe Dumars, NBA executive vice president, head of basketball operations; and Mark Tatum, NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer; NCAA appointees Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball; and Greg Sankey, Southeastern Conference commissioner; at-large representatives Bethany Donaphin, WNBA head of league operations; and Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president of women’s basketball; organizational membership/affiliate director Christopher Parker, National Junior College Athletic Association president and CEO; at-large/independent member John W. Rogers Jr., Ariel Investments founder, chairman, co-CEO and CIO; and athlete representatives Shareef Abdur-Rahim, 2000 Olympic gold medalist; Seimone Augustus, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist; Harrison Barnes, 2016 Olympic gold medalist; Sylvia Fowles, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic gold medalist; and Lindsay Whalen, 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist.
USA Basketball also announced the reelection of retired Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Duke alumnus, as the USA Basketball chairperson, a role he has served since 2016. Dempsey earned a master’s degree in English from Duke in 1984.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, USA Basketball officially formed in 1974 and was known as the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA).
Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and led by CEO Jim Tooley, USA Basketball is the national governing body for the sport of basketball in the United States. As the recognized governing body by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection and training of USA teams that compete in FIBA-sponsored basketball competitions and select national events, and for the development of youth basketball initiatives addressing player development, coach education and safety.
