Shaw Eliminated from CIAA Tournament After Tough Loss to Virginia Union

BALTIMORE, MD – The Shaw University men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday night, falling 71-45 to Virginia Union in the opening round of the CIAA Tournament at CFG Bank Arena.

Despite a strong effort from the Bears’ bench, which contributed 33 points, Shaw (11-17) struggled to keep pace with the Panthers. Trent McIntyre led the team with eight points, while Dreveon Scott added six off the bench, and Jermaine Vereen chipped in five.

The Bears showed hustle on the offensive glass, pulling down 12 rebounds that led to four second-chance points. Shaw’s defense was also active, forcing 24 turnovers and converting them into 13 points. Dee Barnes led the team with two steals.

How It Happened

Shaw got off to a slow start, trailing 32-18 at halftime as Virginia Union controlled the tempo.

The Bears showed some life in the second half, briefly cutting into the deficit before the Panthers regained control. A late 6-0 run, capped by an Ellija Preddy jumper, brought Shaw within 68-37, but Virginia Union closed out the game strong, outscoring Shaw 34-23 in the final period to seal the win.
