Development Consultant – Pledger Consulting, LLC)

Spectacular Magazine CEO/Publisher Phyllis Coley brought greetings as did Google Fiber Raleigh City Manager Joe Mancini. James Sills, President of M&F Bank, talked about the bank’s long-standing relationship with Shaw University.

Dr. Dillard took us back to her days growing up in Mount Airy, NC and how the town had to reinvent itself after manufacturing plants, the town’s main employers, closed. She drew a direct parallel to the fact that Shaw University, under her leadership, is poised to do the same thing. Students ages 18, 19 and 20 years old are not interested in living in dorms with bathrooms and showers that are shared by twenty people. Dillard said those dorms need to come down and replaced with the ‘suite’style’ rooms.

She spoke about the sale of WSHA, the campus radio station, stating that over half of the students were not even aware there was a radio station on campus. There are currently no students at Shaw majoring in radio production or studying to become a dj as there was years ago when the station was established. Mass Communications major are more interested in tv and movie production. She pledged that Shaw University would offer majors that prepare students for today’s world and beyond.

The next Spectacular Magazine Business After Hours is Tuesday Dec. 18 at Empower Dance Studio (109 W. Parrish St – Durham) from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Sponsored by Still Moon Whiskey, this event will also be Spectacular Magazine’s 14th Anniversary Celebration.
