Durham City Council Announces Interim City Attorney
DURHAM, N.C. – Earlier today (Jan. 10th), the Durham City Council voted to offer the position of Interim City Attorney to Kimberly M. Rehberg, who will lead this office effective March 9, 2019.
Current City Attorney Patrick Baker announced his upcoming March 8 resignation during the January 7 City Council meeting. He is leaving the City of Durham to be the city attorney for the City of Charlotte.
“Patrick has given tremendous service to this city for two decades, and he may be the only person who has served as a city manager and a city attorney for the same city. Under his leadership, the City Attorney has done a remarkable job. We will definitely feel his loss, but we wish him the best,” said Mayor Steve Schewel. “Kimberly is a veteran of the City Attorney’s Office and a superb attorney, and I have every confidence that she’ll do a great job as acting city attorney.”
Rehberg currently serves as a senior assistant city attorney for the City and has nearly 20 years of experience in legal issues for local governments, including 14 years with the Durham City Attorney’s Office.
Prior to joining the Durham City Attorney’s Office, Rehberg was an assistant professor of Public Law and Government at the School of Government with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; an assistant county attorney for the Office of the County Attorney with the County of Durham; and assistant general counsel to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.
Rehberg received her Juris Doctor from the Duke University School of Law as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
