Durham Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Continues To Grow, Serve
Durham, NC – Since being chartered in 1951 by 11 prestigious women, the Beta Pi Sigma Durham Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has grown significantly and has made an imprint in Durham County, Orange County, and the surrounding areas. As Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated approaches its 97th Founder’s Day on November 12, Beta Pi Sigma continues to exemplify the sorority’s motto of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”
Beta Pi Sigma is a chapter of love, understanding, encouragement, and solidarity. The goal of the sorority is to serve and advocate for the greater good nationally, regionally and locally. With the Sorority’s mission of empowering women and children, Beta Pi Sigma has established the necessary community partnerships to fulfill its mission and vision.
“We continue to grow through our foundational principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service,” says Madame Basileus Ashley Brown who is the presiding president of the chapter.
Beta Pi Sigma has developed the necessary partnerships within the community, along with their undergraduate sponsored chapters at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke University, that include, but not limited to, Ronald McDonald House of Durham and Wake County, Urban Ministries of Durham, and the Diaper Bank of North Carolina. Fully committed to assisting those in need, with the betterment of the communities in mind, Beta Pi Sigma works with its community partners to implement their national programs and initiatives such as Project Reassurance, Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness and Health Program, Youth Symposium, and Operation Big Bookbag, just to name a few.

With the support of its affiliate groups, the Philo Affiliate and the Rhoer Club, Sigma Gamma Rho has promoted unity among women and teenage girls. The Philos (Philo meaning friends) assist the Sorority in carrying out its community service endeavors as well as assist with the business of the Sorority.
The Rhoer Club consists of a diverse group of young ladies between the ages of 12 and 18 who demonstrate high scholastic averages. The program consists of training and guidance in education, community service, vocational skills, fine arts, and social affairs. The program also provides the young women with energy, support, commitment, and encouragement of the Sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho to help them develop and succeed in their life’s endeavors.
“Our affiliates hold a special place within our chapter. They are just as committed to the work of the Sorority as we are. They’ve also established community partnerships to further our cause,” says Brown.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University, in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven educators. It became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University. ‘Soaring to Greater Heights Of Attainment’ around the world, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has become a leading national service organization.
The Sorority’s goal is to achieve greater progress in the areas of education, health awareness, and leadership development. Its members, affiliates, staff, and community partners work to create and support initiatives that align with their vision. Sigma Gamma Rho visualizes a world in which all women and their families will reach their full potential in all aspects of life and are able to create unlimited opportunities for future generations.
Staying true to the guiding principles established 97 years ago, Beta Pi Sigma continues to exemplify the sorority’s motto of, “Greater Service, Greater Progress”, through their selfless efforts of providing service to the community.
